Leading During Covid-19

I wanted to write about this subject because I feel that many of us are overwhelmed with the words; we keep hearing and reading, leaving us devastated with the lack of direction and fear of the unknown.  Leading during Covid-19 can be difficult. How many times have I read or even written the word unprecedented or uncertain?

No one has a blueprint for the future.   Faced with incoming guests, we are uncertain how the protocols of social distancing will pan out. Will they feel safe and secure?  Not knowing, insecure, and in the dark, we must push forward and create solutions.

Creativity helps calm the fear, as a leader and we are all leaders some are leaders of big teams, and some are leaders of their destiny, but we are all leaders, we need to forge forward, we have no choice but to leap. We must inform ourselves the best we can, rely on our instinct and experience, and develop solutions.

  • Keep in mind that anxiety is fear that manifest, our fear of vulnerability, fear of failing, fear that our routine is upside down. Take this opportunity to evaluate and change what was not working pre-COVID-19.  Planning for the possibilities will give you some relief as to a better tomorrow.
  • Stay positive, easier said than done.  Stay positive by keeping yourself and your team creating and thinking of solutions to our new normality.  Create strategies for overcoming obstacles.  The act of creating offers our brain an outlet for the fear.
  • Envisioning the future and reaching goals allows a feeling of stability, reinstating a sense taken away from us.
  • Every crisis is lined with opportunities.  Have your team brainstorm on initiatives to deal with our new norm.  If there was ever a time to disrupt, this is it.
  • Keep communications open, keep talking to your team about strategies and future goals, ask them to participate.  Now more than ever, we have to be understanding to our co-workers, let them vent, but don’t let them get down.   If you are a one-person show then find digital networking forums to participate in, there are many out there.
  • Don’t over-schedule yourself- With all the zoom calls, google hangouts, it is one meeting after the other; you become overwhelmed and exhausted.  Take breaks in-between your calls, take a walk, analyze the information you’ve received, process it, and move forward with a fresh start.

I am confident that one day, we will all look back and remember the obstacles we faced and how we overcame them.  Our future is not the one we envisioned, but who says it can’t be an improved version.
